About this Place Of Interest

Pura Gunung Kawi, home to one of Bali’s oldest and largest ancient monuments, is a major tourist attraction on the island. It consists of 10 candi (shrines) cut directly out of rock and believed to be attributed to members of 11th-century Balinese royalty. In the past, Buddhist monks and pilgrims are known to have journeyed from far and wide to seek solitude and enlightenment in the meditation caves located in Pura Gunung Kawi. Later on, as Hinduism set foot in Bali, the locale became a sacred site for Hindu worshippers as well to come and present offerings to their deities. Today, despite being a major tourist attraction, Pura Gunung Kawi still welcomes numerous worshippers to its sites, especially during annual religious celebrations.
